Mixing it up…

It’s a Monday thing.

I’m planning ahead – for Monday and for this weekend.

Do you know about Mix It Up Monday?  It’s something we’ve been playing with on Instagram and Facebook, picking twelve fat quarters from different collections that mix well together.  This is what I’ve picked for next week.  There are eight different collections represented there – from Brenda Riddle’s Ambleside to Me and My Sister’s Bandana.  Aren’t they pretty?  (If you want to play along and maybe win this bundle, just follow Moda Fabrics on Facebook or Instagram.)

I want to thank you for all the great suggestions for what you’d like to read about here in the coming months.  One thing is clear… okay, two things.

First, as I knew you would, you thought of things I hadn’t and many of your suggestions gave me ideas for more. Some of the topics will probably pop up soon, others will take a little longer to get the whole story – and to get pictures. So if I don’t get to something right away, it doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten it.

One question I can get to right now is yes, I will be continuing to design quilts and patterns.  It’s actually part of my job, one of my hats here.

Second, I can see that you’ve got my back. You want to make sure I’ve got lots and lots of work to do – plenty to write about – so that I won’t have time to sneak off to the Sample room to play with the fabric. You’re looking out for me and I appreciate that.

I was going to share… I’ve found all sorts of things in the drawers of my desk.

As for me, my second week is ending and while I’m still having trouble with the voicemail playback on the phone system, I am feeling more confident about a few things – like remembering everybody’s name and remembering which printer has the pages I just sent to print.

This weekend should be really nice because it’s supposed to be a sunny weekend – weather-wise and sewing-wise. I have one project to finish for a deadline and another to get busy on for a year-long project.

Did you see the Snapshots quilt by Kimberly Jolly and the Fat Quarter Shop?

Snapshots quilt

As much as I love Bonnie & Camille’s Daysail, I’ve decided to use something else.  The blocks are so cute, they’ll work with anything – and everything – and okay, I like being different.  You can read more about this quilt here.  Did I mention the proceeds all go to a terrific cause?

Make that two year-long projects…

I’m also going to get some of these fabrics cut for another year-long super-scrappy project.  I’ll tell you more about it on Monday.

The fabrics?  Sticks and Stones by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts and Collection for a Cause Mill Book Series Circa 1892 by Howard Marcus Dunn.  (Like the collections in the Mix It Up Bundle, these fabrics are “coming soon”.)

Are you going to sew this weekend? What will you be working on?

If you share your weekend plans, you might soon be doing the cross-stitch on one of these sought-after giveaway totes from Fall Market. (Winners announced Monday morning.)

No Place Like Moda

There really isn’t.

I still have to pinch myself.

Have a wonderful weekend – go make something beautiful.

Dear Carrie has a wonderful new home… Yippee! Car wreck this past Monday will prevent fun sewing this weekend unless I can figure out how to sew from bed! Maybe this is a new invention!? Have a great weekend. Can’t wait to see what you make!

  2. Elaine Cartney says:

This weekend I’m making a baby quilt for my new grandchild – due yesterday but perhaps waiting for it to stop snowing?!

  3. Working on some art-quilted 21-inch pillows, and a commissioned “Minecraft” quilt…for a customer all the way out in California! Yup. Coast-to-coast quilting….Glad things are going well for you at Moda!

  4. Carolyn S says:

Prepping projects for my retreat next week. I’ve taken the plunge and will be making a quilt with 100 pieces per block – call me crazy!

  5. Kathie L says:

I have a lot of movies in my weekend plans. But I also hope to get the borders on a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt of many years ago. It’s one of my UFOs for the year.

  6. I am having a catch up weekend. I just finished a four-month project creating my very first quilt. It was a gift to my new granddaughter. Although it was a simple block pattern quilt, I did do all the quilting by hand stitching. I have never felt the love pour out into my work as much as it did doing all those stitches. So this weekend, I will try to organize my work area and think about which project next to tackle.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

    • Joan says:

Congrats on finishing your first quilt! Its awesome that you hand stitched, and I’m sure your granddaughter will cherish it forever. Whenever I quilt for a baby, I always “sew love” into the quilt and think happy and healthy wishes for the new baby. There is nothing like a home-made quilt that has been gifted.

  7. Joan says:

My plan this weekend is do some embroidery for a quilt square. I only started quilting about 3 years ago and have been hooked every since. About 20 years ago, I was a big,big cross-stitcher (especially loved counted cross stitching) and also loved to embroider, but stopped doing anything creative for a long time. So, as a long time embroidered, it is so nice to me, to see the quilts that incorporate embroidery and quilting. My “old” skills are adding a bit of sparkle to my “new” quiliting hobby. It’s all good!

Thanks Carrie for the emails and Moda Updates. I love looking at the fabrics and reading about what’s going on at Moda. Keep up the good work.

  8. njquilter24 says:

Weekend still up in the air ~ we’re supposed to get sunshine in Northern Michigan (believe it when I see it) but will still get some stitching time in between some indoor pool time at the Y and some cross country skiing. LOVE your blogging with Moda … can’t wait to see all you do there!! {{Music fades with Pharell’s “Happy” }} ……..

  12. Kimberley gurry says:

This weekend the pressure is on to finish a dresden plate quilt in modern tones for a quilt show February 14th. Yikes! Love the cross stitch bag!

  13. martha mumaw says:

  14. Cathy says:

I’ll be prepping some applique to do by hand over the next few weeks, then driving my daughter back to college.

  15. Darlene J says:

Oh my! That bag is adorable.
I made a big promise to myself – 2015 is going to be filled with lots of creative fun. So to continue my fun filled journey I plan to do some serious sewing and some hand embroidery.

  16. Cathie says:

Love this bag! Going to be working on finishing my first paper pieced mini quilt.

  17. Daria says:

I’ll be catching up on making binding for nine quilts. I gave quilts for each of my two daughters and their husbands for Christmas, minus the binding, and these will be the first ones to be bond. Looking forward to watching old movies and binding by the fire.

  18. Gerri says:

You’re a lucky gal! I will be adding the borders to my queen size Jacob’s Ladder quilt. Wish me luck. 😉

  19. Pattyjoe says:

For some crazy reason I’m starting a quilt-a-long with English paper piecing.

  20. Peg Aront says:

I’ve loved your peek into the Moda workings…. I’m sure with time you’ll be sharing more of the behind the scenes 🙂

I’m working on my Moda Building Blocks quilt. I’m doing 5-6 blocks a week along with some friends so today is a cutting day for the January blocks. I’m also working on some embroidery and the big project is finding my glasses…. Yes, I ordered new $300 glasses and got them but since it’s a new RX I have to ease myself into wearing them full time. Well, I put them away for the holidays and can’t find where I put them for safekeeping 🙂 Guess a good old cleaning up is on my list of things to do.

Can’t wait for Mix it up Monday.

  21. mumbird3 says:

    Hi Carrie!
This weekend is my annual trout fishing quilting retreat – my husband takes his fishing gear and I take my sewing machine to a lonely cottage nestled in the hidden woods (well it feels that way!). He fishes and I sew my brains out! It works out well – by the time he gets back from fishing he’s exhausted and doesn’t notice that the cabin is completely submerged in fabric and quilting – and I keep sewing until I can see my fingers! Last year I completely finished machine quilting a queen size quilt!
I am so enjoying your posts at your new job! Love the combination of fabrics you choose in the first photo – very interested to see what you do with it. Looking forward to more fun and inspiration!

  22. Very relieved to hear that you will still be designing patterns. I have some binding to finish this weekend and then I’ll be thinking about a quilt for my daughter’s wedding. I’ve obtained the first block for the snapshots quilt (in return for a donation) and I’m sure that could become a wedding cake centrepiece for the quilt. Just need to think of a design for the rest of it now!! Lynne.

  23. Missy says:

I am making a nursery set for our new arrival due in April. I have been hoarding American Jane fabrics for years waiting to build a nursery around that color scheme. Last night we placed all of the furniture today I start sewing sheets, crib skirt, curtains and more! Quilt to come later.

  24. Clara says:

My granddaughter married an airman last week and I’m making him a quilt using the Because of the Brave fabric by Moda and the Mini Charm Mix pattern from Fat Quarter Shop. It’s a challenge for me to “mix” up the prints to create random groupings but the quilt is going together quickly. Sewing the binding is the project for the weekend.

Wishing you the best in your new job, Carrie!!

  25. Lisa D. says:

I’m definitely sewing this weekend! I am putting the borders on and piecing the back on a long-time UFO (12 Days of Christmas by Kate Spain BOM from FQS). Next? I am beginning 2 music-themed quilts for my twins that are graduating high school in June.

  26. Debi Lohr says:

Finishing blocks for one quilt and binding two others! I do love embroidery too!

  27. shelley says:

I will finish piecing the quilt top of blue and white swap blocks from (possibly) 2009! It has taken me this long to find the right setting. This swap was with other quilters from around the world. It is such a treasure. I love the mix it up Monday (and will tune in), and love, love everything Edyta, since we are both from the great state of Michigan! So happy to see you turn another corner of life, Carrie. Can’t wait to see all that you create!

  28. Lynn says:

This weekend I’m going to start a new quilt that will be a Valentine’s Day wall hanging. And I’m going to make churros for my mom’s birthday.

  29. Jenybeth D. says:

While I was planning on working on three different projects this weekend my plans have shifted in a new direction-I have to move to Minneapolis in two weeks! I was planning on moving mid-March, so no sewing for me… OK, maybe a little. 😉

  30. Geema says:

We’re getting some oysters to smoke on the grill. I have a quilt on the frame for a lady in our church who had a stroke. I hope to finish it tomorrow while watching ballgames. Sunday school and church on Sunday. Lastly, bind the quilt now on the frame while watching the rest of the ballgames.

  31. Jean Elliott says:

This week-end I am sorting through my 30s/40s reproduction fabric to use in a sewing case that has a 30s/40s theme…no quilting for me yet…just cutting out quilt pics! Wow, a sample room….loved seeing the rows of fabric. I think I’d would be overcome surrounded by all that fabric as I’d just want to sew sew sew!!!

  32. Pat S says:

Love that bag – so cute! This coming weekend, I’m going to continue working on my sew a long Christmas quilt, hoping to get all the blocks pieced. Thanks for the chance to win!

  33. Helen G. says:

Since I get the holiday on Monday I am planning to finally finish the binding on at least one quilt plus audition some fabrics for the Fat Quarter Shops Snapshot quilt. While shopping for Christmas presents I might have gotten a little carried away for presents for me at fabric shops. So, I need to be on a fabric diet for a little while. It’s not like I don’t have a lot of fabrics to choose from right now. But I sure wish I had access to that sample room.

  34. Christine says:

I’m going to finish up kitting a cowl for the second time. The first time it was too loose but I has muched impoved with a diffrent size needle.

  35. Just Sew Sue says:

I have one part row on a quilt to finish quilting. Should have finished it last week, but I only spotted a mistake when the thread ran out so I’ve done some unpicking this week ready to finish it this weekend.

  36. Linda Cates says:

I’m working on Camille’s pattern Sweet Life from her book Simply Retro. Your posts make me want to sew and buy more fabric. I want that second stack. You’re a marketing genius! What have you done with Lissa?

  37. Lynne says:

I want to work on some pillows that are paper pieced and of course watch some football 🙂

  38. Jocelyn says:

I love your updates Carrie. And I especially love your Instagrams. Too bad you didn’t show us the faces of the two guys 😉 I am working on a Schnibbles pattern for a Blog Hop I am participating in on Sunday. I love the pattern and there will be a little bit of 9 patch history to the post.

  39. Judy W says:

Gonna start cutting into my fabric for my first quilt! Visited my local quilt shop this week (shout out to Kindred Spirits Quilt Shoppe in Oxford, MI for all your help!!) and I’m ready! So excited!!

  40. Jen says:

I have my fingers crossed that my Moda Building Blocks Quilt kit will arrive today. Otherwise, I’ll be working on my Moda Love Block/Quilt.

  41. Another great post from you, thank you! This weekend I’m going to restart hand quilting my hexy quilt (it got put to one side over Christmas as I wanted to start hand quilting my Christmas quilt in the appropriate month!) and watch lots of telly/films/box sets…I hope!

  42. Gretchen says:

I also plan to work some on my Words to live By quilt and the almost 700 hsts that go with it.
    Thank you!

  50. Shirley Metcalfe says:

I think my weekend will begin tonight with a hockey game. After several years w/o, we finally live near an ECHL hockey team again. Our team, the Fort Wayne Komets are taking on Evansville tonight. The last time the two teams faced each other, the gloves dropped in the first 5 minutes, so it should be a great game. On Saturday my parents are coming and spending a night. Best of all, our temps may get above freezing!! I’m glad you are settling in and I’m looking forward to hearing more about Moda, you, those projects, etc.

  56. Four dogs and one quilter says:

This weekend will be spent working on the purging and packing; moving in the spring so getting the house ready to sell. Love moving to a new place. Hate the packing. Keeping some hand projects out of the boxes so I have something creative to keep the stress levels down.

  57. Yay on all accounts!! Glad you’re happy, glad we’re happy, and thrilled that you get to continue to design and share. I’m working on a scarf (Prim Muslin Flannels) with a sweet little needle turn applique on the edge. A technique share with a small group of quilters I’m meeting with next week. Have a great weekend!!

My friend and I are going on a mini (2 stores) quilt shop hop so she can spend her Christmas GC’s. I of course will be there in a purely advisory role. A movie with my husband and then a Sunday working on home projects (and hopefully I can sneak some bee block sewing somewhere in there).

  59. Diane says:

I don’t usually plan too much because I learned over the years that others in my life have plans of their own that usually take precedence. I’m currently working on getting backings made for some charity quilts and getting my project ready for a guild charity ‘quilt ’til you wilt’ next week. As always, love your blog posts….it’s a perfect job for you! 🙂

  63. Sandra D says:

I plan to work on a cover for my Featherweight Betty Lou. I bought her as a Christmas gift to myself. Her case is stinky as many are so I need to keep the dust off her. We made a pincushion together to see how great she sewed. We then paper pieced the Featherweight design by Charise Creates and will incorporate that into her cover. I look forward to working on a lot of projects with Betty Lou 🙂 I want to do the Snapshot QAL also but I’m thinking bright and beautiful like the Sanibel line.

It’s usually loads of fun and we all get some sewing done. We all try to out-do one another by getting the most sewing done!! Since I am the hostess, I usually get the least accomplished but it doesn’t matter. It’s the brainstorming and suggestions we trade that make it all so great.

I’m trying to stay within the limits of what I have gathered, but I may have to supplement just a little. It will either be a totally scrappy 9-patch, with the reds and blue against the tans and creams, or maybe a bit larger Irish chain (single or triple) with about another yard and a half of light lights.

Everything for quilting is thrown into various boxes and locations. Kinda like how Carrie must be feeling about her big move. All I want to do is work on a small project and feel the touch of fabric, thread and needle running through my fingers and my sewing machine once again. Sigh…
